Hammerich’s House and Ærø Museum
Just a few houses up the street from The Monica, you’ll find the charming Hammerich’s House. This small museum offers a glimpse into local history and culture in an intimate and authentic setting. Across from The Monica, you can also find Ærø Museum. You can experience tour around either Hammerich’s House or Ærø Museum with Sille Radoor Larsen, who is Head of Department. A lovely addition to your stay in Ærøskøbing.
Visit Rejkjær Textiles and weaver Dorthe Rejkjær
Here you will gain a unique insight into the design and development processes behind the garment brand Rejkjær. During a visit to Rejkjær, you will have the opportunity to explore the weaving studio and the looms, as well as discover how a piece of handmade clothing or an interior textile is designed and produced. Dorthe will also share her design philosophy and her approach to aesthetics, sustainability, and product development.
Dorthe has made a radical shift in her life. In 2018, she left Christianshavn in central Copenhagen and settled on Ærø, right in the heart of nature, where she now works professionally as a weaver and textile designer. Dorthe is also a sheep farmer and develops her own wool yarn, some of which is used in the garments, and she is also a beekeeper.
Dorthe Rejkjær creates handmade clothing under the name Rejkjær and interior textiles under the name Wait a Moment Design Works. The foundation of her design and development process is the aim to create the best possible product, based on quality, long-lasting durability, aesthetics, and form. Each garment and interior textile is truly unique, 100% handmade, and handwoven.

Walk and hike on Ærø with John Moloney
Ærø has some excellent walking and hiking, and you are invited to join John to experience the beauty of the island on foot. John is Anglo/Irish but has lived on Ærø for 20 years. He is a keen local historian and rambler.
Options include:
- The Vitsø loop, which takes in the old royal manor house at Søbygård, the lake and bird sanctuary at Vitsø, Søby itself, and some of the best views in Denmark from the old windmill (Vester Mølle).
- The Ærøskøbing loop, which includes the historic town itself the nature reserve at Gråsten Nor, Gallows Hill and Nevresti.
- The Lindsbjerg/Dunkær loop, with more fine views, bronze age burial chambers, the Viking trading centre, and Skt Alberts church.
- The Archipelago way and the Coastal path, each around 34 km and going the length of Ærø. Either can be done in sections.
The loops last about 2:15, or 3 hours with picnic lunch. Half sections of the Archipelago Way and Coastal Path are longer – around 3 hours or 3:45 with picnic lunch. Either path the whole length of the island, Søby to Marstal, needs the whole day!
